If Not You Who, If Not Now When?

Not my words unfortunately, nor were they my coaches when he used them just before I went out and won my second World Championship medal. But I do feel these words are quite apt for this time of year when the phrase “New Year’s Resolution” will be banded around.

This is when you can step up to the plate and try to achieve something you have always wanted in health and fitness (or in fact any aspect of your life you have been thinking about improving!)  I’m not talking about climbing Everest, swimming the Channel or rowing the Atlantic here, but small achievable goals that can grow into other larger goals.  For example, if you are someone who is overweight but would secretly like to be able to run - whether a relatively short distance or up to a marathon - it can be achieved if you want it enough.  Every aspect of your life will need to be looked at and you will need to make changes in order that you can create time for yourself to be able to achieve these goals.  However, don’t attempt to do this all in one go as this is exactly why New Year’s Resolutions fail so easily!  Just try one thing at a time, e.g. eating more vegetables and fruit or opting to take the stairs at work instead of the lift.  Do this for a week and then move the goal posts to something more challenging, e.g. reducing your calorie intake or going for a swim.
