This one is going out to all the Ladies
The debate has been going on for a while when women are likely to catch up the men in the sporting arena. Altough there are some sports where this will be a lot harder the pinnacle event is the Marathon where women have been playing catch up and are now close to the men with only a 10 minute time difference and are becoming closer every decade. So us men need to keep looking over our shoulders.
Some common things that women need to look out for in their training and health: Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is bit of connective tissue behind the back of the knee that stops the knee over straightening. This bit of tissue can become lax in women and is a common injury in that part of the body. So if you are having any pain in this area please seek medical advice rather than just carry on regardless.
The monthly cycle in women can also make a significant difference whilst training. If iron stores become too low your ability to transport oxygen will be impaired. Breakfast cereals which are fortified in iron are great plus red meat and wholemeal bread. Avoid tea and coffee at mealtimes.
For the slightly older woman fat increases with age more than for men. This is when it becomes generally harder to get around the tennis court etc so you do less, then this becomes a downward spiral but can be reduced largely by strength training. Just get a good personal trainer to show you how and by increasing muscle mass you will burn more calories.
Bone density in women peaks at about the age of 20. From this point onward it is in decline without any interventions like calcium in conjuction with weight bearing exercises. Women tend to shy away from weights but it could be argued that resistance exercises are more important than they are for men. Good luck.
