Toby Garbett is an Olympian
and two-time World Champion.
Since 1996, Toby has been a member of Leander Club, the British team’s high performance centre in Henley-on Thames. He first represented Great Britain in 1997 aged 19 and has since competed in 5 World Championships and attended 2 Olympic Games (Sydney 2000, Athens 2004). He is currently training towards the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
Toby’s
journey has not been an easy one. In 1998 he developed a
prolapsed disc, just three weeks before the World Championships,
which took him out of training for 4 months. Just as he had
recovered and was preparing for the 1999 season Toby had
a further setback when he was diagnosed with glandular fever,
a virus which ruined any chances of competing for the team
that year. With only a season left to make his mark in the
Olympic team, he failed to make an Olympic boat but won a
gold medal at the World Championships in the Coxed Four and
was selected to be spare for the team in Sydney.
