After the Olympics, Toby was selected in the new Coxless Four – a promising combination which won World Championship gold (2001) and silver (2002 & 2003) medals in the run up to Athens. However, in 2004 a controversial selection decision saw Toby and fellow oarsman, Rick Dunn, removed from the crew and placed into the Coxless Pair with just 6 months to prepare before the Games. They bravely rose to the challenge, but were pipped for a place in the Olympic final, finishing 1st in their “B” final, beating an established Italian pair who had been strong medal contenders. Their time in their final race was the fastest that any pair had recorded in the world that year and represented a huge personal achievement for them both, despite their disappointment at not fulfilling their Olympic gold medal dreams.

The setbacks that Toby has faced and recovered from have given him renewed drive and determination to win Gold in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
