Are you an athlete looking for a job or career or a company interested in employing one?
I would like to introduce myself – my name is Toby Garbett. I have spent many years working with another different sort of team! I was a British Olympic athlete and double world champion and was part of the British Rowing Team from 1997 to 2009 and am now running my own personal training, health and fitness business.
Whilst I was an athlete I was very focused on one goal – winning medals! Until I took a year out of my sport and experienced an unexpected grant reduction I suddenly found myself going from Olympic athlete to odd job man in the space of a couple of months. This made me realise why athletes need to plan ahead whilst still focused on their goals of Olympic glory. I also spent some time earlier in my career whilst injured, undertaking part time and full time work and this is often the case for many athletes.
There are various places to go, websites etc, but none of this is well signposted and I have for a while been ‘working behind the scenes’ and discussing how British sport should be more proactive in making sure that athletes ‘in sport’ know where and what to do ‘after sport’. I have had meetings with several affiliated sporting organisations including UK Sport, English Institute of Sport, Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust and the British Athletes Commission who were all very supportive of the idea of increasing the employment network opportunities for athletes in the future.
- These organisations and other bodies seek to help all athletes and certainly ‘life after sport’ will become an issue for most of them.
- Instead of just telling people to look for a job – I can, together with my association with TEAM (The Employment Agencies Movement) which is a worldwide organsation, can offer that extra help and guidance and I hope an introduction to a job!
- I and other TEAM members can assist highly dedicated, goal focussed candidates who have a high level of skills and abilities comparable to graduates. Many of you will be based around some of the national training locations but in practise you could be searching for work anywhere in the country but I can assist you wherever you are based.
- I can assist you with not only TEAM member advice, guidance, CV preparation, interview help etc – you may even get a job!
